Step-by-Step Guide

Pillars of Umrah Umrah consists of five pillars, namely, Ihram, Tawaf, Saie, shave or trim the hair and adherence to the order of the pillars of Umrah.

Ihram Ihram is the state a pilgrim is required to be in to perform Hajj or Umrah. Ihram is assumed by reciting the Niyyah for Ihram at the Miqat after wearing the Ihram attire and by observing the prohibitions of Ihram.

Niyyah to assume Ihram for Umrah نَوَيْتُ الْعُمْرَةَ وَأَحْرَمْتُ بِهَا لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى “I intend to perform Umrah and enter the state of Ihram for the sake of Allah the Almighty” Compulsory requirements of Ihram Recite the Niyyah for Ihram at the Miqat after wearing the Ihram attire Observe the prohibitions of Ihram Pilgrims who did not enter into Ihram at the Miqat must give Tertib and Taqdir Damm in the form of a small sacrificial animal or 1/7th of a large animal such as a cow or a camel or, if unable to do so, the pilgrim must fast for 3 days while in the state of Ihram or if unable to do so, the pilgrim must give Sadaqah equivalent to 10 cups of food.

Ihram Attire For men, two sheets of unstitched white cloth - one as covering for the lower body, one wrapped around the upper body, and a pair of slippers or sandals that expose all the toes.

For women, there is no specific attire – clothing must cover the Awrah but does not cover the face and hands. Steps to enter into the state of Ihram 1. Sunnah acts before reciting Niyyah for Ihram: Clean and purify the body by clipping the nails Trimming the moustache and beard Removing unwanted hair under the armpits and the pubic area Apply fragrance Apply hair oil Perform Ghusl or ritual bath for Ihram Perform Wudu Perform Sunnah prayer for Ihram 2. Tawaf Tawaf is the act of circling the Ka’aba seven times in counter clockwise direction with each circle beginning and ending at the Hajarul Aswad.

Steps to perform Tawaf In the state of Wudu’ with the Awrah covered before entering Masjid al-Haram Free from major and minor impurities The body, attire and location of Tawaf are clean Baitullah is on the left-hand side Perform seven times, each beginning from the corner of Hajarul Aswad and ending at the same spot Done inside Masjid al-Haram but outside of Hijir Ismail and the walls of the Ka’aba Done with the intention to perform worship and not for any other purpose Sunnah acts of Tawaf Observe Idtiba’ which is to expose the right shoulder by passing the upper Ihram cloth under the right armpit for men Approach the Ka’aba while performing Tawaf if possible and it is not too crowded Begin Tawaf with Istilam which is the act of kissing or touching the Hajarul Aswad or if beyond reach, signalling to it by hand Upon reaching Rukun Yamani, perform Istilam by touching it, or if beyond reach, through signalling by hand Raml, or walk briskly, during the first three rounds Make Dua in every round Refrain from talking or eating while performing Tawaf Perform seven rounds in succession After completion of all seven rounds, perform 2 rakaat Sunnah prayer at Maqam Ibrahim Drink Zamzam water while resting and making Dua Make Dua at Multazam If proceeding to perform Saie, perform Istilam for one final time

Saie Saie in Umrah refers to the act of walking back and forth seven times starting from Safa’ Hill and ending at Marwah Hill.

Steps to perform Saie Performed after the completion of Tawaf Free from impurities and Awrah is covered Begin each round at Safa and end at Marwah The trip from Safa to Marwah is considered one round and the trip from Marwah back to Safa is a subsequent round Complete seven rounds confidently Each trip must reach the end of the designated Saie area which is the foot of the hills of Safa and Marwah Done within the designated area for Saie Done with the intention to perform worship and not for any other purpose Sunnah acts of Saie Done while in the state of Wudu’ Enter into the Saie area through Safa Ascend the hills of Safa and Marwah to the rocks of the hill for men Face the Ka’aba upon reaching the hills of Safa and Marwah while raising both hands and recite the Takbir Make Dua and recite Dhikr while performing Saie Observe Idtiba’ on each round for men Raml, or walk briskly, at the area marked with green light for men Perform seven rounds in succession

Shave or Trim Hair Shaving the entire head or trimming the hair is the obligatory act that must be performed in order to leave the state of Ihram.

Steps for shaving or trimming the hair Perform after the completion of Tawaf and Saie Shave or trim the hair from head Cut or remove at least three strands of hair Sunnah acts while shaving or trimming the hair Shaving is preferred to trimming the hair for men Shaving is done as a complete act on its own without cutting the hair beforehand or cutting it again later at a shop Begin shaving from the right side of the head

Adherence to the Appropriate Order The pillars of Umrah must be performed in the correct order. Niyyah for Ihram must come first before the other pillars Tawaf must come before Saie Shaving and trimming the hair must be done after Tawaf and Saie

Prohibitions of Ihram

Acts that Violate the Conditions of Ihram

Taraffuh Prohibition on acts that are done for the purposes of enjoyment and comfort. Covering the head for men Covering the whole body for men Covering the face for women Wearing gloves Applying scents Applying oil on the head or beard Performing pre-sexual acts Having sexual intercourse Marry Itlaf Prohibition on acts that are done to remove, eliminate, damage or destroy. Cutting, shaving or removing hair Clipping nails Hunting or killing animals Cutting or removing trees and vegetation Outcome of violations Takhyir and Taqdir Damm is imposed on pilgrims who have violated the prohibitions of Ihram. This type of Damm is given by slaughtering a goat; or by giving Sadaqah of two cups of food to six poor people; or by fasting fast for three days. If sexual intercourse is performed before the completion of Umrah, the Umrah is deemed void. The remaining rites must still be completed. Furthermore, the husband is subject to Tertib and Ta'dil Damm which is given by slaughtering a camel; or a cow; or seven goats; or give Sadaqah equivalent to the value of a camel; or fast for the number of days according to the number of cups of food equivalent to the value of a camel. If pilgrims hunt and kill animals in or outside of the Haram while in the state of Ihram; hunt and kill animals in the Haram when not in the state of Ihram; cut, chop down or remove trees in the Haram, Takhyir and Ta'dil Damm must be given. This type of Damm is given by slaughtering an animal of the same value as the hunted animal or the felled tree; or give Sadaqah equivalent to the value of the hunted animal or the felled tree; or fast for the number of days according to the number of cups of food equal to the price of the hunted animal or the felled tree. If a pilgrim marries or officiates a marriage while in the state of Ihram, Damm is not imposed but the marriage is deemed invalid.
