Baggage
Cabin Baggage
All you need to know about cabin baggage Usually referred to as carry-on baggage, hand baggage or unchecked baggage. Cabin baggage is baggage that is in the control and custody of the passenger and is carried into the cabin.
Note: The cabin baggage allowance for Enrich Platinum and Gold/oneworld Emerald and Sapphire members remain as per their ticketed class of travel. The additional free baggage allowance applies to checked baggage only.
Controlled and Restricted Items
All forms of liquid are only permitted in containers that are less than 100ml in capacity.
Containers must be placed in a re-sealable transparent plastic bag with a maximum capacity of 1 litre (see picture below as example). Each passenger is allowed one (1) re-sealable transparent plastic bag and it must be presented for x-ray screening separately from other cabin baggage.

Exemptions
Medication/medicine and special dietary supplies needed when flying are exempted from the above restriction if accompanied by a letter from a doctor/clinic/hospital or a prescription. Baby milk/foods are exempted if carried by passengers with a child below 7 years of age. Items purchased at Airport Duty Free Shops or on board the aircraft on the day of travel are exempted, subject to the items being packed in a sealed plastic bag that is tamper-evident and accompanied by satisfactory proof of purchase.
Insulated Packages Containing Refrigerated Liquid Nitrogen
Liquid nitrogen dry shipper carrying human embryo samples is permitted as checked or carry-on baggage subject to the approval of AVMED.
Perishables Packages Containing Carbon Dioxide, Solid (Dry Ice)
Solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) shall not exceed 2.5kg (5Ib) per passenger when used to pack perishables that are not subject to the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations in carry-on baggage only. Passengers are required to declare when carrying solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) as hand-carry/cabin baggage/carry-on baggage upon booking/check-in. Seafood is not permitted to be checked in. Fresh and/or frozen seafood may be accepted as cabin baggage only, subject to the destination’s quarantine regulations and provided that such items are properly packed (usage of crush ice is not permitted) and meets the cabin baggage weight and size requirements.
Checked Baggage
Baggage Dimension The maximum allowable linear dimension (length + width + height) of a checked baggage is 158cm. Any bag with a linear dimension between 158cm and 204cm is considered an oversized baggage. Baggage with dimensions exceeding 204cm is not permitted as checked or carry-on baggage and should be transported as freight.
Baggage Weight For piece concept, the weight of each checked baggage must not exceed 32kg for Business Suite/Business Class or 23kg for Economy Class. For weight concept, the weight of each checked baggage must not exceed 32kg for Business Suite/Business Class and Economy Class. There are no limitations on pieces of baggage under the weight concept.
Malaysia Airlines offers free allowance for baby equipment, personal medical equipment, crutches, canes, walkers, back supports, wheelchair back inserts and braces. Infants on 10% tickets are allowed 1 bag with a maximum dimension of 115cm as carry-on baggage and 1 fully collapsible baby pushchair, stroller or carrying basket. The weight of the allowed items is must not exceed 10kg in total. Persons with disability are allowed a wheelchair/mobility device, crutches or other orthopaedic device in addition to the general Free Baggage Allowance (FBA).Checked baggage entitlement for oneworld passengers are the same as above and any excess baggage shall be charged accordingly. As of 1 August 2018, Free Baggage Allowance for passengers on EYCL and Malaysia Airlines' domestic routes has been revised to 20kg (from the previous 30kg). There is no change to the existing policy for the following: Allowable number of pieces and baggage dimension Enrich Platinum/Gold/Silver additional FBA entitlement BSCL FBA entitlement of 40kg Passengers travelling under Government (GOM) warrant are not affected. They are still entitled to 30kg FBA for Malaysia Airlines Domestics routes.
Special Baggage
Cabin Seat Baggage or baggage that may not suitable for storage in the cargo hold such as musical instruments, works of art, electronic equipment, diplomatic baggage and valuable baggage, can be carried in the cabin compartment depending on its size and shape. Musical instruments can be stored in the cargo hold as checked baggage if appropriately packed. Small instruments, such as the flute or violin, may be carried as carry-on baggage, whereas large instrument, such as the guitar, may require the purchase of an extra seat. Larger-sized instruments, such as the trombone, must be stored in the cargo hold as checked baggage. Sporting equipment must be appropriately packed in protective bags or wrap.
Battery-powered Wheelchair and Mobility Aid
Battery-powered wheelchairs and/or mobility aids powered by non-spillable wet batteries or dry batteries as specified in the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) are permitted as checked baggage subject to Malaysia Airlines' approval. Passengers may request for approval to carry their own battery-powered wheelchair and/or mobility aid via Malaysia Airlines' Global Contact Centre at 1-300-88-3000 (in Malaysia), +603 7843 3000 (outside Malaysia) or the appointed travel agents at least seven (7) working days prior to the date of departure so the necessary arrangements can be made for you.

Each type of battery requires specific acceptance and loading/unloading procedures in accordance with IATA DGR, IATA Resolution 745 and Recommended Practices contained in IATA Passenger Standards Conference Manual (PSCM).
Items Prohibited in Checked Baggage
Compressed gasses. Corrosives. Poisons. Flammable liquids. Mercury. Deadly weapons. Acids. Oxidising agents. Explosives. Radioactive materials. Magnet materials. Undeclared ammunition. Firearms and ammunitions are subject to security handling in accordance with airport authority regulations. Weapons such as an antique firearms, swords, knives and similar items may be permitted as checked baggage in accordance with Malaysia Airlines' regulations but not as carry-on baggage. Perishables such as fresh or frozen food, floral or nursery stock, and cut flowers and foliage are permitted subject to the signing of a release. However, due to the risk of spillage or leakage, seafood is only permitted as carry-on baggage.
Transportation of Self-Heating or Ready-to-Eat Meals on Flights Operated by Malaysia Airlines
All passengers onboard Malaysia Airlines' flights are prohibited from carrying any kind of self-heating or ready-to-eat meals, and neither passengers nor crew are permitted to store them in checked or cabin baggage. Ready-to-Eat Meals or Self-Heating Meals includes food and beverage items that contain heat packs or self-heating packs, such as a quick and simple hot pot, rice, and drinks. These packs contain hazardous materials such as corrosive calcium oxide, iron powder, self-burning solid carbon, magnesium powder, and self-igniting powder that releases flammable gas when it comes into contact with water.
Battery-powered Portable Electronic Smoking Devices
Battery-powered portable electronic smoking devices are not allowed as checked baggage.
They are for personal use. Their spare batteries are individually protected in their original retail packaging or by insulating the terminal. The spare batteries do not exceed lithium content of 2 grams for lithium metal batteries or do not exceed a Watt-hour rating of 100Wh for lithium-ion batteries. Each battery for the item meets the requirements of each test in the UN Manual of Test and Criteria, Part III sub-section 38.3. At the check-in counter, notice to classify electronic smoking devices as dangerous goods must be placed.
Fragile Items
Handling Procedures Checked baggage should not contain fragile or perishable items, money, jewellery, precious metals, computers or other electronic devices, silverware, negotiable papers, securities or other valuables, business documents, passports and other identification documents or samples. Fragile items will be accepted as checked baggage if they are appropriately packaged in a properly sealed original factory shipment carton, a cardboard mailing tube, a container, a case designed for shipping the item, or if they are packed with protective internal material. Fragile items not appropriately packaged will be accepted upon the signing of a release form which relieves the airline from any liability for unsuitably packed baggage, improperly sealed package, damage to content, or delay in delivery due to unsuitability of the items as checked baggage and/or the inadequacy of their packaging and not from Malaysia Airlines' failure to exercise the ordinary standard of care.
Mishandled Items
Delayed Baggage
If you arrive at your destination without your checked baggage, please be assured that we will do our best to retrieve it for you. Please report your delayed baggage to us immediately on arrival. If you have left the airport, please report your delayed baggage within 24 hours of the baggage going missing. If you are still at the airport, the report can be made at the Baggage Office upon arrival or online . If you have already left the airport, please submit the report online. If you encounter any problems in submitting a report, please contact us via e-form here . You will receive written confirmation of your baggage case report number. This report number is required for future tracking purposes. Delayed baggage is usually located within 24 hours and can be delivered to your home, office or hotel, subject to local customs regulations.
Damaged Baggage
If your baggage is damaged, please report it upon arrival before leaving the arrival terminal at our Baggage Services Office. A Property Irregularity Report (PIR) will be issued. If you discover that your baggage is damaged after you have left the airport, a report must be filed, no later than seven (7) days from the date of receipt of the baggage. You may submit the report online via our Self-Service Reporting portal here . Our Baggage Services Office at KUL is located at Level 3, Baggage Reclaim Area, Main Terminal Building, KLIA and operates from 0700hrs until 2359hrs (local time).
Lost Property
If you have left any items on the aircraft that you would like us to try to recover, please submit your report at the Baggage Office upon arrival or online through Lost and Found Property e-form. Baggage Services Office at KUL is located at Level 3, Baggage Reclaim Area, Main Terminal Building, KLIA and operates from 0700hrs until 2359hrs (local time).
